GR8 – A Business Built On Strong Female Leadership

GR8 was set up in 2018 to fill gaps in recruitment in the construction and hospitality sectors. Since then, the team has steadily expanded its operations to include the early years’ education sector, health care, retail and administration.

Boasting a senior management team that’s predominantly female, the business has built a strong reputation in Jersey and Guernsey for delivering skilled people sourced locally and overseas. Based on its values – passionate, adaptable, inclusive and driven – GR8 prides Itself on providing the ‘right solution at the right time’ for hundreds of businesses in the Channel Islands and further afield.

“We are extremely lucky that we have a strong term at GR8 that we are growing as the demand for our services increases.”

– Di Sumnall, Director of GR8

Diane has more than 20 years’ experience in customer service and people management, working for the Government of Jersey and for the Ministry of Defence before that. She’s a specialist in building relationships with businesses in all the sectors that GR8 works in, matching potential candidates to suitable and sustainable employment.

What we have previously termed as blue-collar sectors are now increasingly calling for more skilled workers to fill the growing number of vacancies. The cost-of-living crisis has added to the pressures that businesses faced post-pandemic when the recruitment market looked very different to what we had been used to for many years.

‘Now, clients want a steady stream of people to fill roles that they would have easily filled in previous times. It’s vitally important that we develop strong relationships with our clients so that we can understand their needs and make sure that we can match the right people to those roles. We are extremely lucky that we have a strong term at GR8 that we are growing as the demand for our services increases.

‘Our strengths lie in the partnerships we have built with the public and private sectors. Working with business organisations, such as the Chambers of Commerce in the three Crown Dependencies, we can focus on finding solutions that best suit our clients.

Retention and fulfilment are key, and one of the most rewarding things is bullding up and maintaining strong relationships with those employees and the businesses they work for.’

“Over the last couple of years, we have concentrated on supporting sectors that have seen a huge growth in demand. Unfortunately, the industries that are crying out for people have struggled to find them in Guernsey and Jersey and we have been working with them to help solve those.”

– Em Holliday, Director of GR8

Em leads GR8’s recruitment from outside the Channel Islands and British Isles. Leading the overseas recruitment programme, Em handles the relationships the business has created around the world, working with our clients and matching up suitable and qualified candidates for the roles they clients need.

‘Over the last couple of years, we have concentrated on supporting sectors that have seen a huge growth in demand.

Unfortunately, the industries that are crying out for people have struggled to find them in Guernsey and Jersey and we have been working with them to help solve those issues. Looking beyond the Common Travel Area is a solution that we provided to the hospitality and construction sectors in the immediate aftermath of Brexit and during the difficult trading period caused by the Covid pandemic. It’s now providing a solution for other sectors, including in early years education.

‘Drawing on the pool of talented and qualified people in Kenya, we are already helping to relieve some of the pressure that nurseries and early years settings have experienced, especially as more parents with young children are returning to work just to make sure that enough is coming in to cover the rising costs of running a household. We can provide qualified Level 3 Childcare professionals from Kenya, and so far, nine have been recruited to work in the Channel Islands this year.

“Thanks to the strong relationships we have built up with the governments and training colleges in the Channel Islands and in Kenya, all our candidates have the right qualifications to meet the required standards, bridging any extra skill requirements and qualifications and being familiar with the cultural differences where they are based.”
